Possible day 30 result | Mo Man!

Whilst I don’t suffer from either of these conditions 2011 has been a tough year for me. Earlier in the year I was misdiagnosed with a torn chest muscle which actually turned out to be a pulmonary embolism, the result of a huge blood clot in my leg that had broken up and travelled in to my lungs. I spent a short amount of time in hospital, underwent untold tests and was in a huge amount of pain. It was a lucky escape. I still take medication daily and have my blood tested every two weeks. This experience has given me a much greater respect for the need to be aware of what’s happening to your body and the need for regular checkups. I think Movember is a worthy cause, New Zealand and Australian men especially, tend to have a ‘she’ll be right’ attitude towards their health. If Movember helps create some open dialogue and starts to chip away at this attitude, then that’s okay with me.

I was reading some Maori myths the other day, specifically the story of how the Tongariro National Park was formed. The abbreviated version goes like this; Originally there were 4 manly mountains and they were all pretty hot for the fine girl mountain in the area. Naturally they fought for her affection, when the smoked cleared Tongariro emerged victorious, and the other mountains fled through the night.

So I put pencil to paper and came up with this somewhat minimal, geometric and just a tad ambiguous design. I call it ‘Once there were five’.

Intended to celebrate the capital’s film industry the plagiarised Hollywood-style sign will be 3.5 metres high and 28m wide. It is understood to cost several hundred thousand dollars and is intended to be ready for the Rugby World Cup in September. So that’s great, just as we invite tens of thousands of people into our fine country, we’ll greet them with this spectacle of tackiness. Why would a city that prides itself on its individuality and creativity erect an imitation Hollywood sign?! Is that the best we can do? It seems it’s the best Wellington airport can do and they own a good percentage of the land. I agree with the thought process behind the sign and as Steve Fitzgerald (CEO of Wellington Airport.) says, “ Everyone benefits from increasing tourism for Wellington. The film industry is a hugely significant contributor to our economy, and it is vital to promote and support it if we are to see continued growth in our region”. I don’t see a problem with that. But our film industry and our culture has a reputation for creative solutions and innovation, not plagiarism.
