Mens Health, Movember and Me.

This year I’ve registered for Movember. That’s right I’m a Mo Bro. Today is day four of my moustache growing campaign and I’m currently referring to it as the slowmo. For those of you who aren’t aware of Movember here’s the low down; Each year during the month of November men all around the world ditch their razors and start cultivating a moustache. The aim of which is to raise funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression. Mo Bros as we’re known effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through our actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

Whilst I don’t suffer from either of these conditions 2011 has been a tough year for me. Earlier in the year I was misdiagnosed with a torn chest muscle which actually turned out to be a pulmonary embolism, the result of a huge blood clot in my leg that had broken up and travelled in to my lungs. I spent a short amount of time in hospital, underwent untold tests and was in a huge amount of pain. It was a lucky escape. I still take medication daily and have my blood tested every two weeks. This experience has given me a much greater respect for the need to be aware of what’s happening to your body and the need for regular checkups. I think Movember is a worthy cause, New Zealand and Australian men especially, tend to have a ‘she’ll be right’ attitude towards their health. If Movember helps create some open dialogue and starts to chip away at this attitude, then that’s okay with me.

If you’d like to help me raise money for men’s health jump over to my Movember page and donate a few dollars. Even just a dollar, it all helps. On that page and to a lesser extent here, I’ll post regular updates of my mo as it progresses from the slowmo to something a little more creative. I’m hoping to create a time lapse of the mo towards the end of the month that will document its progress.

Day 3 - The slowmo

That’s my story. I hope you’ll help me out.

Shane. Soon to be known as ‘Mo Man’.

Time Lapsing in the Parliament Grounds

I got bored one lunchtime and just happened to have my camera gear with me. So I busted out the tripod and intervalometer and made me a short time lapse in the Parliament grounds of Wellington.
I’m still testing the waters with time lapse videos but I think I’m getting the hang of it. I’d like to attempt an HDR time lapse and some day/night transitions at some stage, so stay tuned.

Maori Myths and T-shirt Concepts

Today we see three but once there were five…

I was reading some Maori myths the other day, specifically the story of how the Tongariro National Park was formed. The abbreviated version goes like this; Originally there were 4 manly mountains and they were all pretty hot for the fine girl mountain in the area. Naturally they fought for her affection, when the smoked cleared Tongariro emerged victorious, and the other mountains fled through the night.

So I put pencil to paper and came up with this somewhat minimal, geometric and just a tad ambiguous design. I call it ‘Once there were five’.

NZ Womens T-shirts

I thought I’d talk a little bit about our New Zealand women’s t-shirts because we’re quite proud of them. Unlike countless indie t-shirt labels that have infected the interweb, we don’t do unisex t-shirts.

New Zealand women know what they want and they sure as hell shouldn’t have to settle for anything less. Very early on we made a commitment to supply only the best women’s t-shirts, tailored to fit perfectly. This didn’t happen overnight, we tried and tested numerous styles before we settled on what we consider the perfect NZ women’s t-shirt. Super soft 100% combed cotton that feels great against your skin. Pre-shrunk to minimise shrinkage because who really likes shrinkage! All our women’s t-shirts are a little longer than usual with an ultra flattering fit. Designed from scratch by our good friends that supply us. For information on sizing please click here.

Looking Flash: Clothing in Aotearoa New Zealand [Paperback]

Don’t ask me how but I just stumbled across this book – Looking Flash: Clothing in Aotearoa New Zealand. Sweet cover image! You have to respect anyone addressing Royalty in a classic kiwi black singlet. Apparently the book offers a fresh look at the role of clothes in New Zealand history.

Wellywood?!

Is New Zealands capital of creativity really planing on going ahead with this ridiculous sign?

Intended to celebrate the capital’s film industry the plagiarised Hollywood-style sign will be 3.5 metres high and 28m wide. It is understood to cost several hundred thousand dollars and is intended to be ready for the Rugby World Cup in September. So that’s great, just as we invite tens of thousands of people into our fine country, we’ll greet them with this spectacle of tackiness. Why would a city that prides itself on its individuality and creativity erect an imitation Hollywood sign?! Is that the best we can do? It seems it’s the best Wellington airport can do and they own a good percentage of the land. I agree with the thought process behind the sign and as Steve Fitzgerald (CEO of Wellington Airport.) says, “ Everyone benefits from increasing tourism for Wellington. The film industry is a hugely significant contributor to our economy, and it is vital to promote and support it if we are to see continued growth in our region”. I don’t see a problem with that. But our film industry and our culture has a reputation for creative solutions and innovation, not plagiarism.
